Vegetation responses to climatic and geologic controls on water availability in southeastern Arizona

چکیده

Abstract Vegetation distribution, composition and health in arid regions are largely dependent on water availability controlled by climate, local topography geology. Despite a general understanding of climatic geologic drivers plant communities, trends responses to distribution storage across areas under different controls poorly understood. Here we investigate the multi-decadal interactions between spatial heterogeneity temporal variation their impacts vegetation (via normalized difference index, NDVI) monsoon-driven region southeastern Arizona. We find that grasslands display low NDVI respond directly monsoonal rainfall. In uplands, west-facing slopes canyons share similar averages variability, suggesting they both use from surface-groundwater flow paths through fractured rocks. Along San Pedro River, streamflow, groundwater, deciduous riparian woodlands strongly responsive rainfall, but stratifies wet (perennial), intermediate, dry reaches, underlain affect table elevation. These interact with driving climate shallow alluvial aquifer zone, primary source gallery phreatophytes. A recent shift toward strengthened monsoon has led an increase for reaches Pedro, while benefit is more muted along wetter where forest shows signs having reached its maturity, diminished NDVI. results have implications future vulnerability dryland change, which may be either dampened or intensified such as

Vegetation dynamics--simulating responses to climatic change.

A modelling approach to simulating vegetation dynamics is described, incorporating critical processes of carbon sequestration, growth, mortality and distribution. The model has been developed to investigate the responses of vegetation to environmental change, at time scales from days to centuries and from the local to the global scale. The model is outlined and subsequent tests, against indepen...

Climatic and geologic controls on suspended sediment flux in the Sutlej River Valley, western Himalaya

The sediment flux through Himalayan rivers directly impacts water quality and is important for sustaining agriculture as well as maintaining drinking-water and hydropower generation. Despite the recent increase in demand for these resources, little is known about the triggers and sources of extreme sediment flux events, which lower water quality and account for extensive hydropower reservoir fi...

How energy and water availability constrain vegetation water-use along the North Australian Tropical Transect

Energy and water availability were identified as the first order controls of evapotranspiration(ET) in ecohyrodrology. With a ~1,000 km precipitation gradient and distinct wet-dry climate, the North Australian Tropical Transect (NATT) was well suited for evaluating how energy andwater availabilities constrain water use by vegetation, but has not been done yet. In this study,we addressed this que...

When vegetation change alters ecosystem water availability.

The combined effects of vegetation and climate change on biosphere-atmosphere water vapor (H2 O) and carbon dioxide (CO2 ) exchanges are expected to vary depending, in part, on how biotic activity is controlled by and alters water availability. This is particularly important when a change in ecosystem composition alters the fractional covers of bare soil, grass, and woody plants so as to influe...

Adaptation of Leaf Water Relations to Climatic and Habitat Water Availability

Successful management of forest systems requires a deeper understanding of the role of ecophysiological traits in enabling adaptation to high temperature and water deficit under current and anticipated changes in climate. A key attribute of leaf water relations is the water potential at zero turgor (πtlp), because it defines the operating water potentials over which plants actively control grow...
